Huddersfield Giants stun Catalans Dragons providing huge opportunity to Leigh Leopards and St Helens

It’s been a weekend of huge games so far and the big games will keep coming with Leeds Rhinos set to take on Salford Red Devils tomorrow alongside a Hull derby between Hull KR and Hull FC all of this after a shock win for Wakefield Trinity against Wigan Warriors, disappointment for Castleford Tigers against Leigh Leopards and of course the clash between Warrington Wolves and St Helens.

However, a game overlooked by some and seen as a formality by the majority was Catalans Dragons’ clash at home against Huddersfield Giants.

The Dragons entered the game on a winning run and top of the league and are often seen as near unbeatable at home whilst Ian Watson’s side have been struggling.

The Giants though got first blood after a high bomb from the Dragons backfired and allowed Kevin Naiqama to streak away and score the first try of the game.

However, the French side hit back with a try from Tom Davies to level matters as Arthur Mourgue nailed the conversion.

The Giants though remains positive with Chris McQueen scoring after great work from Tui Lolohea to fire the Giants 12-6 ahead.

Olly Russell then nailed a penalty to make it 14-6 but a second try from Davies narrowed the lead to 14-12 at the break with Jake Connor missing a penalty.

After 16 minutes of a close battle in the second half, Mourgue nailed a penalty to level matters until Chris McQueen hit a great line to power through and make it 20-14.

A decisive blow but the game was sealed by an Olly Russell penalty to wrap up a vital 22-14 win.

The door is now firmly open at the top of the league with Leigh Leopards just two points behind and St Helens four points behind with a game in hand.
