Last night it was announced that former Wigan Warriors, St Helens and Huddersfield Giants star Lee Gilmour would be taking on a coaching role at Brighouse Rangers.

He follows in the footsteps of former Bradford Bulls and Wigan Warriors star Stuart Fielden who also took on a similar role.

They’re not alone in joining amateur clubs in coaching roles with Huddersfield Giants star Olly Russell also taking on a surprise coaching role.

He has joined Oldham St Annes in a coaching role alongside former Championship player Neil Cherryholme going into 2023.

The club made the following statement:

“Paul Green and Mick Cashin are pleased to announce Neil ‘ chez’ Cherryholme former Championship player and Oliver Russell current Huddersfield Giants player and former saints youth player onto the coaching team for this year.”

Russell again sadly missed out on the number six and seven shirts at Huddersfield in 2023 with Tui Lolohea keeping six, Theo Fages remaining at seven with Lolohea’s potential move to one prevented by Jake Connor taking on that jersey.

Russell was one of the underrated performers of the 2022 season and played in the Challenge Cup Final.

He will certainly be pushing for a spot in the Giants halves in 2023 given his definite quality.
