In the midst of their latest injury crisis, Huddersfield Giants’ performance staff are assessing why the club continues to pick up so many injuries.
Luke Robinson has only been able to name a 20-man squad ahead of the Giants’ round three clash with Castleford Tigers on Friday night and that highlights just how many injuries the club has picked up already.
Adam Clune and Niall Evalds dropped out of the fold before the Super League season had even started and they remain on the sidelines alongside Joe Greenwood, Adam Swift, Harry Rushton and Liam Sutcliffe, while Sam Hewitt is suspended this week.
The Giants have boosted their ranks with the signing of Tanguy Zenon from Halifax Panthers, but he won’t be involved this weekend and the club have also seen promising youngsters Marshall Land and Archie Sykes go down, too, in recent days.
As such, a big chunk of their salary cap will be sat in the stands on Friday night when the club will hope to pick up their first win of the season against the Tigers, who are also winless so far.
However, while they work on those players who are ruled out, the Giants’ performance team are looking into and analysing why the club are picking up so many soft tissue injuries.
“It’s not ideal,” Robinson said on Huddersfield Giants’ situation. “It’s round two and we have a few of the lads carrying niggles and knocks.
“Even at the younger end we’ve picked up a fair few as well, Marshall Land and Archie Sykes, in the reserves fixture we picked up some pretty nasty injuries, so they’re on the sidelines as well now.
“I think we’re accustomed to [how tough it is], it’s not our first rodeo when it comes to stuff like this. We’ve got thick skin and the boys are pretty much accustomed to it. It’s like water off a duck’s back.
“For us, we’ve still got a lot of senior boys in the squad, we’ve still got a really good team and we’re still confident.
“It’s been like for about 18 months now if I’m honest. There’s stuff going on off the field and the surface we’re on has changed so they’re looking into things like that.
“Obviously the Joe Greenwood and the Harry Rushton ones are just… one’s pretty much broke his ankle, syndesmosis and the other one has dislocated his thumb, that’s just part and parcel of it. The others ones are hamstrings and calf injuries and the performance team is looking at that.”
