Huddersfield Giants sign rising star forward to pro contract

Huddersfield Giants have announced that they have signed one of their rising stars to a professional two-year contract.

The Giants, who are going through an unprecedented injury crisis in 2025, have confirmed that young forward Jacob Algar has signed a two-year professional contract with the club.

Algar had been named in Luke Robinson’s 21-man squad ahead of today’s Super League Round Seven clash with Catalans Dragons, however, the youngster played for the Reserves on Saturday instead.

Max Merta was another who had been named in the 21-man squad but represented the Reserves as the Giants lost 42-32 to Salford Red Devils.

Algar’s deal will kick in from December meaning he is contracted for the 2026 and 2027 seasons but will remain in and around the first-team set-up this season, as evidenced by the fact he was named in the 21-man squad for today’s game.

The club confirmed his deal with a statement, announcing: “Huddersfield Giants are delighted to announce that young forward Jacob Algar has penned a professional two-year contract with the club.

“Commencing from December 1st, Jacob Algar will sign his first professional contract with the club he has come through the pathway at, impressing at Scholarship and Academy level, he has been rewarded for his hard work.”

Speaking on his new deal, Algar said: “I’m very happy to be signing a first team contract with the club at such a young age, I couldn’t be happier that Luke Robinson and Liam Finn are putting the trust in me, giving me the opportunity to develop over the next two years at the club.

“It’s a real exciting time for me, I just want to work hard and repay the faith they’ve shown in me.”

The club’s Academy head coach, Steve Fox, added: “He’s a big and athletic lad, with great leg speed, he can play front or back row and he’s got great awareness within the game and so robust, he’s going to be the complete package.

“When I came here, I got more of a role to develop the players and Jacob is a real success story, there’s more to come as well, there’s no doubt about that, I got him here as a fourteen year old and he’s developed just as we thought he would.

“Depending on where Robbo sees him in the future, we believe he can play front or back row and he will excel in those positions, he’s got superb work ethic and you can’t teach that, he wants to learn and he has that desire to reach the next level.”
