Huddersfield Giants have confirmed that they have signed one of their England internationals to a new deal ahead of the upcoming season.
Oliver Wilson has established himself as one of the shining lights at Huddersfield Giants, whom he signed for from Bradford in 2019. His performances have seen him earn an England call-up and they’ve now also been rewarded with a contract extension.
Wilson had penned a new deal during the off-season of 2022, signing a four-year deal that would have kept him with the club until the end of the 2027 season. However, they’ve now added a further year on top with the 24-year-old locked in until the end of the 2028 season.
Huddersfield Giants confirmed that news with a club statement which announced the length of Wilson’s new deal.
It read: “Huddersfield Giants are delighted to announce that recent England International Oliver Wilson has extended his contract until the end of 2028.”
During his time with the club, Wilson has made 95 appearances and been one of the side’s best performers. In their recent squad number reveal, he was handed the number 8 as a starting prop alongside NRL signing and fellow England international Tom Burgess.
Huddersfield Giants extend contract of Oliver Wilson
The Giants have a number of players off contract at the end of the 2025 season but opting to secure a further year on Wilson’s deal highlights his importance to the team.
Nine players are off contract at the end of the 2025 season but securing Wilson was a priority with head coach Luke Robinson claiming that the 24-year-old is the sort of player that a squad can be built around.
Robinson said: “He’s someone we want to build the club around, we’ve shown faith in building him up to where he is now and he still has so much more to achieve, when he came to the club from Bradford, he’s grown as a person and a player to become an England international player.
“We’re absolutely delighted that he’s chosen to extend his time here, and it shows that we’re building something special that we can keep talented young players such as Olly.”
Wilson also commented, revealing: “It’s a great feeling, Robbo has shown commitment to me giving me the eight shirt, they’ve backed me since I signed and its now time to get to work and put in for the upcoming season and help the squad as much as I can.
“I’d like to think I work extremely hard for the team, with my carries and in defence and I enjoy playing for Huddersfield, I can’t complain really Huddersfield gave me that opportunity to shine and I feel like Ive done that.
“I’m only 24 so I’ve still got a lot to learn and playing with Thomas Burgess is something I’m looking forward to, what I can learn from him is exciting, we need to repay Ken and perform like we know we can this season.”
With fellow prop and recent signing George King set to miss the start of the season, a heavy workload could be thrust upon Wilson from the get-go in 2025, particularly given the loss of Chris Hill.
