Huddersfield Giants prop Tom Burgess has confirmed his season could well be over, with a hip injury potentially ending his year.
Burgess, who is in the second year of a three-year deal, has been limited in appearances as of late, and that is not set to change any time soon.
The former England international last played almost a month ago, in the away defeat to St Helens. He has now shared an update on his immediate future, and whether there is any rugby left for him in 2026.
“I’ve had a few little niggles this year,” he said to The Bench podcast I’ve been pushing through it, but I’m off at the moment.
“I’m looking at potentially getting an operation on my hip, which has sort of been chronic.
“That’s a decision I need to make, whether or not I can keep going, but also you want to be at a good level, and you want to be training every week.”
Whether Burgess gets the surgery will determine whether he plays again this season, but interestingly, his issue now is the same type of hip problem that his brother George had in his playing career.
“We’re identical twin brothers, so we’ve got the same hip,” he revealed. “I’m actually seeing the same surgeon that he saw, so that gives me a bit of confidence.
“He said it changed his life, but I’m not getting the same as what he would get. Basically, it’s something that has got worse over the last year, and we’ve seen that from scans.
“It’s something I need to get sorted now, and going into my last year I’ll give it a red hot crack.”
The 34-year-old is starting to come to the end of his career, and with one more year left on his current deal, he wants to have the best preparation going into what could well be the final year before hanging up the boots.
He added: “I want to make sure that I’m not cutting into pre-season as well. It’s about a four-month recovery so we’ll see. No decision has been locked in just yet.
“I’m pretty close to getting it sorted. I played against Saints (21st June), and I’ve been feeling alright, but other things start cropping up, so I think I am going to get it done soon and hopefully time it right.”
