Huddersfield Giants pair set for long-term lay-offs as Luke Robinson confirms bad news

Huddersfield Giants boss Luke Robinson has confirmed that both Matty English and George Flanagan will be out long-term.

The pair limped out of the action last weekend against Hull KR and they have now joined an injury list at the Accu Stadium is already extensive.

English suffered a knee injury following an illegal cannonball tackle from Rovers’ Karl Lawton on Sunday. Lawton has been hit with a three game ban by the RFL’s Match Review Panel and will miss the cup clash between the two sides on Saturday afternoon.

However, he’ll return before English, who is looking at a period of around two to three months on the sidelines with a medial ligament injury.

George Flanagan will be joining him in the Huddersfield treatment room, too, with the full-back being ruled out for the next few months with a syndesmosis issue.

“George is syndesmosis so he’ll be out for the next few months,” Huddersfield Giants boss Luke Robinson said. “Matt English, obviously with the cannonball to his knee, there were fears it was going to be his ACL, but he’s been very fortunate, it’s his MCL and he got the good news yesterday that he won’t be out for as long as what we originally first feared.

“If there’s a rainbow or a little bit of light in the tunnel, that was probably it for him yesterday.

“It’s still going to be around a two to three month timescale.”

Huddersfield have been boosted by the return of Adam Clune and Niall Evalds returning to training this week, but neither man will play against the Robins and they remain sidelined with the likes of Adam Swift, Zac Woolford, Harry Rushton, Liam Sutcliffe and Sam Hewitt.

New signing Tanguy Zenon is cup tied, too, ensuring he won’t be in action this weekend, either.

“I don’t think anyone needs me talking too much about it. It’s there to be seen, everyone knows, everyone understands the situation we’re in and where we’re at,” Robinson said. “It’s only early in the season and it’s not ideal by any stretch of the imagination but it gives lads an opportunity to play and don the famous Huddersfield shirt and do themselves proud, their families proud and hopefully do the club proud.”
