Huddersfield Giants director of rugby Andy Kelly has revealed that Taane Milne is a target ahead of the new Super League season. Milne was linked with a move to the John Smith’s Stadium earlier this month by Rugby League Live and it seems the Giants are now in talks to sign the Fiji international.
Milne is a free agent at present after being released by South Sydney Rabbitohs at the end of the 2024 NRL campaign. The 29-year-old spent four seasons with Souths, making 69 appearances and scoring 24 tries, while he also helped the club to within 80 minutes of the 2022 Grand Final.
Prior to his spell at the Rabbitohs, he spent time with St George Illawarra Dragons and New Zealand Warriors, with his NRL debut coming at the former. Milne also has 14 caps for Fiji, with his most recent outing coming last month against Cook Islands.
Milne has spent the majority of his NRL career in the outside backs, either playing at centre or on the wing, but he has played in the pack, too, and lined up in the back-row for his country last time out. He’s also played at loose-forward and that versatility may well be one of the main reasons why Huddersfield are looking at him as they continue building on Luke Robinson’s squad for the 2025 Super League season.
“He’s a target for the club and that’s hopefully something we can make happen,” Kelly, who is newly appointed to the director of rugby role, told Serious About RL’s sister site the Yorkshire Post.
“We’ve got a number of targets we’ve identified but it will only be one more at this stage. Whoever is first through the door would be our last piece of business in terms of incomings.”
Huddersfield have made five new signings ahead of the new season, with Tom Burgess, Jacob Gagai and Zac Woolford making their way over from the NRL, while Liam Sutcliffe and George King have also joined the club.
