Huddersfield Giants man pens new deal as club sign Super League loanee

Huddersfield Giants have confirmed a new deal for one of their rising stars in a major boost for the Super League side, whilst also signing a rival Super League man on loan.

The Giants sit at the foot of the Super League table and are the only team in the competition not to pick up a win so far, losing in all six games with their latest defeat coming at the hands of Hull KR who put 50 points on them.

That 50-4 loss saw George Flanagan score Huddersfield’s only try with the playmaker dancing through from 50 metres out to score a wonderful try.

It’s now been confirmed that the Giants have confirmed Flanagan has signed a new deal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2027 season.

The Giants signed Flanagan from Bradford Bulls before loaning the youngster out to Hunslet in League One last year with the Parksiders earning promotion that season.

Thrust into the Huddersfield team in 2025 due to injuries, Flanagan has impressed and now been rewarded with this new contract.

It’s not just George Flanagan who Huddersfield have handed a contract but also Hull KR hooker Bill Leyland who the Giants have signed on an initial tw0-week loan.

Leyland, who the Robins signed from London Broncos has played just once with that coming in the Challenge Cup against Oldham but with Zac Woolford out for Huddersfield, he’s a welcome addition.

Announcing Flanagan’s new deal, Huddersfield released a statement revealing: “Exciting talent George Flanagan has penned a new deal with the club that will see him remain a Giant until the end of the 2027 season.”

Reacting to the deal, head coach Luke Robinson said: “Really excited that George has committed his future to us, we see a lot of potential in him, he’s showed his promise in a team that’s going through a sticky patch, the job he’s been doing is great for us, he’s got a lot to learn but we think he can go to the next level.

“Every good side is built on the youth and we’re looking to the future with George, he understands the club and has a lot of good qualities that can take him to the next level, as shown with his recent performances against some of the best teams in the competition.”

Announcing Leyland’s arrival, Huddersfield confirmed: “Huddersfield Giants can confirm the signing of Hull KR Hooker Bill Leyland on an initial two-week loan.

“With Zac Woolford still recovering from his injury, Luke Robinson and Andy Kelly have moved to provide cover for this position, with promising young hooker Leyland joining from Hull KR.”
