Huddersfield Giants legend Tony Johnson passes away at 66 as club pays tribute

Huddersfield Giants have paid tribute to a former player who has passed away over the Christmas period.

Tony Johnson, whose career spanned from 1973 to 1984 has sadly passed away and the club are sending their love to his friends and family at this difficult time.

They have paid tribute on Twitter and all at Serious About Rugby League would like to echo these sentiments.

Tony passed away at the age of 66. He was born in Jamaica and moved to Yorkshire with his family aged 2, was a strong second-row who gave excellent service to a number of clubs, most notably Huddersfield – and following his retirement he played a leading role in the Huddersfield Former Players Association.

Having worked in the police force, he also served the RFL as an investigator and mediator for more than a decade.

Robert Hicks, the RFL’s Director of Operations and Legal, said: “This is such sad news, as Tony was such a popular and respected figure across the sport.

“All who played with or against him speak highly of his qualities on the pitch, and I know I speak on behalf of dozens of RFL employees who have been grateful for his work behind the scenes on behalf of the sport – the sort of thing that is easily overlooked, but without which, no sport could function  effectively.

“The respect that Tony had earned through his on-field exploits undoubtedly helped him in dealing with players and clubs, and together with the experience and knowledge he had gained in the police force, it made him a perfect fit.

“He also invested so much time in the Past Players Association at Huddersfield, which survives and thrives as a legacy to him.”
