Huddersfield Giants have ‘a lot to work on’ as coach gives assessment

New Huddersfield Giants assistant coach Liam Finn has spoken on his first few months with the club and argued that the club still have “a lot to work on” following their friendly loss to Bradford Bulls.

The Giants were defeated 28-14 by the Championship outfit with head coach Luke Robinson arguing that there was a lack of “enthusiasm and desire” among his team, something he has claimed will not happen again.

Robinson had named a relatively strong starting XIII given the players he had available, although the bench was primarily made up of reserves and academy players – whose performances he praised.

Assistant coach Liam Finn, who joined the Giants from Halifax Panthers ahead of the 2025 season, has now given his views on his first few months with Huddersfield with a further assessment on that Bradford game and the team’s next steps.

“I’m really enjoying it here,” Finn said via the club’s media.

“It’s been nice to get going and get a few months under my belt. I’ve found my feet and I’m comfortable within the group now. I’ve got my roles and responsibilities and I’m trying to help Luke [Robinson] prepare the team as best I can.”

Huddersfield Giants looking for improvement after Bradford loss

Finn played for both Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Trinity during his Super League career but spent the majority of his playing time with Dewsbury Rams and Featherstone Rovers, the former of whom he coached in 2022 and 2023.

After his maiden season at The Shay, he made the move to Huddersfield as Robinson’s assistant and the former Irish international has now given his verdict on the squad, claiming that there is a lot to be excited about despite the defeat to Bradford given the number of players set to return from injury.

He said: “The attitude of the players has been really good. The Bradford game gave us a lot to work on, and a lot of stuff to fix up. We do have a lot of players to come back into the squad so there are things to be excited about and things to keep us on our toes as well.”

Huddersfield were one of several Super League sides to utilise a warm-weather training camp and Finn hailed the efforts of the younger players there, just as Robinson did following that Bradford fixture.

“Malaga was a really good trip,” he explained.

“A lot of the young lads that went there stood up. When you’re doing team-on-team stuff, the quality of sessions is dependent on how good the opposing team are and the young lads did that and really helped get some quality out of it.

“We’re looking for improvement. We dipped our toe in against Bradford and a lot of the players are looking to cement their place in the team and they’ll need to step up and be better against Featherstone. There’ll be a few looking to right a few wrongs, but we’ll also be able to add a few more players into the mix and strengthen the competition for places.”
