The only all-Super League clash today saw newly-promoted London Broncos travel north to face Huddersfield Giants.
Ian Watson’s side had won easily in their first game of the pre-season as they ran out 36-0 victors over Championship side Dewsbury Rams, whereas London’s game last weekend saw them draw with Castleford Tigers.
Watson had commented on that in his pre-match press, explaining: “I was impressed with the way they went about the game I thought they played the game real simple and were real physical so it’ll be a good challenge and we’ll see what they bring to Super League.”
His Huddersfield Giants team now faced the Broncos and he’d explained that he would name a strong side featuring some of the club’s NRL recruits such as Adam Clune and Jack Murchie.
That’s exactly what he did with the Giants looking close to full strength. New signings Elliot Wallis and Adam Swift started on the wings, Clune partnered Tui Lolohea whilst both Hugo Salabio and Jack Murchie started in the pack.
English-born Thomas Deakin started from the bench as well as part of a large 27-man squad.
As for the Broncos they allowed triallist Lee Kershaw a start on the wing with new signings Rhys Kennedy and Sadiq Adebiyi forming what looked a strong pack with star man Dean Parata at loose forward. New recruit Jack Campagnolo started from the bench.
New signings star for Huddersfield Giants
With plenty of new signings playing in front of their home crowd for the first time it was a question of which one would become an immediate fan favourite, and the answer could have been one of many.
That’s because both Adam Swift and Jack Murchie scored within the first ten minutes to help the Giants open up a 10-0 lead.
Triallist Kershaw continued to stake a claim that he is a Super League-level talent by pulling one back before another new signing scored for the Giants.
This time it was former Castleford Tigers’ youngster Elliot Wallis and he doubled up scoring five minutes after his first to make it 18-6.
London pulled a couple back before the break through Dan Hayes and Kershaw again making it 20-16 to the home side after the first forty minutes.
It seemed each winger was trying to outdo the other with Adam Swift then becoming the third winger to add a second to his tally, extending Huddersfield’s leads and from there they never looked back.
Tui Lolohea danced through to make it 32-16 as he showed his class before Adam Swift won the race to a hattrick between the three wingers, adding his third following a clever offload from Sam Halsall.
Harvey Livett then got in on the action to extend the lead for Huddersfield who put on a show for the home fans with Jake Bibby adding another to help take the score to 50-16.
It was an incredibly impressive second-half display from Huddersfield Giants but one that will potentially make Broncos’ fans worried about the season ahead.
