Huddersfield Giants have been dealt a double injury blow on the eve of the new Super League season.
The Giants struggled with injuries last season and the series of fitness setbacks they suffered was one of the key reasons why the club struggled to find traction in the Super League table. Niall Evalds and Adam Clune were two of those who missed huge chunks of the season last year and the Giants have confirmed the pair have picked up fresh issues.
Clune and Evalds were both missing on Friday night when Huddersfield took on Hunslet in the Challenge Cup and the club have now announced that they will miss the opening few weeks of the season.
The specifics are yet to be firmed up, but their losses will come as a huge blow for Luke Robinson ahead of Friday’s clash with Catalans Dragons.
One name that will be in team though is George Flanagan, despite leaving the field on Friday night with an issue. He’s fit and training and is now expected to play at full-back against the Dragons.
Huddersfield Giants have also confirmed that Sam Halsall is fit after overcoming the injury he picked up at the South Leeds Stadium, too.
“It’s obviously very disappointing to lose two senior players so early on and you feel for them as people but it won’t be for too long we hope as both are exemplary professionals and will rehabilitate with our specialist staff,” Robinson said on the injuries.
“Like everyone I was concerned that George and Sam had to come off at Hunslet in very difficult conditions but both have reported in fit and well and trained fully today.
“We’ll name our 21-man squad on Wednesday ahead of the trip to Catalans which we are all looking forward to.”
