It has been suggested that Huddersfield Giants could be set to build their own stadium, after 3,000 watched them slip to a 66-0 defeat to Warrington Wolves.
Despite having a 24,500-capacity stadium to play in, the Giants have seen attendances of under 4,000 in every home game since July, and a low of 1,673 watched them, in the Challenge Cup against Hull FC in March.
A chastening defeat to nil on Saturday evening will have done little to bring disillusioned fans back.
Meanwhile, not owning their own stadium, and not having primacy of tenure, means the Giants will struggle to make the necessary changes in line with IMG, while clubs such as Castleford and Wakefield have done this with ease, and now seem to be shoe-ins for Super League next year.
Huddersfield Giants could build new stadium in the coming years
Brian Carney, on Sky Sports, has suggested that the situation may be set to change, as owner Ken Davy is said to be considering something big.
Carney said: “We’re here and they’re rattling around in this stadium we know that they have a problem attracting people in this stadium. What I’m hearing is, that perhaps Ken Davy, in a last show of largesse (generosity) in his investment in the club, will help them have a new facility built, purpose-built facility built for them here in the town of Huddersfield.
“It would be smaller capacity, more intimate, better chance of getting bigger crowds in it, and that may be at least a step in the right direction facilities-wise for the club.
He continued: “Call it Fartown. They had that. They’ve just been here that long, they haven’t grown into it, the fanbase hasn’t grown. Ken Davy must be tired of putting his money in because look at the investment over the last four years in particular.
“He splashed the cash, and brought big name players in. And you think about that and where he is now. He’s going right back to the start.
“You’ve got to respect somebody like Ken Davy who just throws his money into a club and keeps throwing it in because there’s so many compelling reasons not to isn’t there?”
After a steady decline in attendances over the years, you feel that something has to change for the Giants.
