Huddersfield Giants have confirmed that they’ll be entering a dual registration deal with newly promoted Championship side Dewsbury Rams, with the two teams also set to play each other in pre-season.
Plenty of clubs have been confirming their dual reg partners of late with Leeds Rhinos entering a deal with Halifax Panthers, whilst the powerhouses of each division in Wigan Warriors and Wakefield Trinity have also linked together.
The Giants have now confirmed their deal with the Rams, Dewsbury having earned automatic promotion from League One in the 2023 campaign.
Dewsbury have changed coaches following their promotion with Liam Finn having departed to coach Halifax, with Dale Ferguson taking over in his place.
Obviously Huddersfield still have Ian Watson in charge with the club aiming to return to the play-offs in 2024 following a disappointing 2023 season.
Now the pair have confirmed their dual reg deal, whilst the Giants have also confirmed who they will play in their pre-season games.
A statement from the Giants confirmed the news, reading: “Huddersfield Giants have finalised their pre-season schedule with three games to lead into the Betfred Super League opener against Leigh Leopards on Friday 16th February. In a change from previous campaigns the Giants will face Super League opposition in two out of the three games.
“To cement our Dual Registration partnership with neighbours Dewsbury Rams our first fixture will see us travel away to the Flair Stadium in Dewsbury on Sunday 21st Jan to take on the newly promoted Rams – full admission details will follow in the New Year.
“For our first home trial game of 2024 the Giants will take on Betfred Super League newcomers London Broncos at the John Smiths Stadium on Sunday 28th January. Mike Eccles’s men will make the journey up the M1 to throw down a marker for their intentions in 2024 and this will be the first time the two clubs have met since 2019.
“Our final test before the first-round proper will be against our West Yorkshire Betfred Super League rivals the Castleford Tigers on Sunday 4th Feb away at the Jungle.
Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis commented on the schedule and dual registration, adding: “The dual registration agreement with Dewsbury will work well for us in a number of areas given the size of squad we have going into 2024.
“Every player in the full time squad already has either Super League or Championship experience under their belts and reserves is a step backwards in terms of intensity and quality in many instances.
“The locality of Dewsbury fits nicely for training and of course their Head Coach Dale Ferguson is a man known to most here and held in high regard.
“The partnership will enable movement both ways and the trial game will kick start what we hope will be a long term relationship with Dewsbury.”
