Huddersfield Giants boss rues key shortcoming in Leigh Leopards defeat

Luke Robinson was left to rue his Huddersfield Giants side’s ill-discipline as they came up short at Leigh Leopards on Sunday afternoon.

The Leopards claimed a 24-10 win over the West Yorkshire outfit with tries from Keanan Brand, David Armstrong, Matt Davis and Tesi Niu extending their 100 per cent record at the start of the season.

Oliver Wilson touched down for the Giants while Super League debutant George Flanagan kicked well from the tee, but it wasn’t enough to prevent them from falling to a second defeat of the season.

Ultimately, Robinson believes the score flattered the home side at Leigh Sports Village but he also admitted his Huddersfield Giants side were their own worst enemies at times.

“I don’t think the scoreline reflected the game,” Robinson told the BBC. “I thought it was closer than what the scoreline ended up, a little bit like last week.

“We were in the game but there was probably a little bit of ill-discipline from us in the second half. I think it was a really soft penalty but I understand the way the game is now, you can’t touch kickers after they’ve kicked the ball. It gave them field position and we never really recovered after that.

“We were a little bit ill disciplined, coming out of yardage we’d give them the ball back and we pretty much were stuck in our own half for a while after that.

“There was a lot of good things out of that performance to take. It was just unfortunate for us that we just did too much defending and inevitably when you play against a side like Leigh who have attacking threats throughout the side, eventually they’ll make you pay.

“I was really disappointed when Armstrong made the break, Jake Bibby got a head knock so we were a man out of the line and we lost Jack Murchie, he basically lost a tackle, so there was two men out of the line. Before that we held on valiantly but we did too much of it.”
