Huddersfield Giants boss Luke Robinson has responded to speculation of who will join the club and serve as his assistant coach.
The role has remained vacant since Robinson was moved to the interim head coach position after the departure of Ian Watson. With Robinson now officially confirmed as the head coach, the search for an assistant is hotting up.
It will be a desirable job given the fact that two of the three sacked coaches in Super League saw their assistant either see out the season or be appointed as the permanent head coach, in the form of Simon Grix and Robinson.
The Giants boss has now been asked about speculation that former Super League player and current Halifax Panthers boss Liam Finn is in line for the role.
Speaking to BBC West Yorkshire, Robinson confirmed: “We’ve been speaking to different people, he’s obviously someone I know and admire.
“He’s tactically astute, he knows the game, he had to work really hard in his career so he’s really intelligent but he’s one of many that got propositioned to us and that process is still ongoing.”
Huddersfield Giants face time pressure in coach appointment
Robinson won’t have an assistant in time for Saturday’s game and likely won’t for next week’s game on Thursday night but he’s highlighted the importance of getting someone in to help the Giants start their pre-season.
“We’d like it before the season’s over, obviously. We want to start making plans for pre-season. Pre-season’s not that far away. Making plans regarding that, it needs to be sooner rather than later.
“The quicker we can get staff in place, we’ve got a few other staff members that are potentially moving on next year. It’s not only regarding the 2025 squad, we’re also trying to make sure we get the right staff in place.”
He also confirmed that the process will take in the club’s youth aspect as well, insisting that he won’t have full say in the matter amidst the reports that Liam Finn could be the hire.
“Again, I’m part of the collaboration that makes up who I want within the side. I’ve said numerous times, we’ve got to as a club make sure we make the right decision that’s not only beneficial for myself, but it’s beneficial for Andy Kelly, he’s got to have a say in that from a youth and team manager perspective, and the CEO, Richard, and Ken Davy, the owner. So, yeah, we’re going through it and making sure we appoint the right man.”
