Luke Robinson has vowed to ask some serious questions of his Huddersfield Giants team after surrendering yet another lead. The Giants turned in their best 40 minutes of the season so far and led Wigan Warriors 18-10 at the break at the Brick Community Stadium.
The returning Adam Clune was one of Huddersfield’s best, coming up with two assists and having a say in the build up to the third, ensuring everyone of a Giants persuasion will have been hopeful that the club could kick on to claim their first win of the new season.
However, the Yorkshire outfit simply lacked the answers in the second half as Wigan scored six second half tries to run away with the contest and hand Robinson’s side yet another defeat, with the final score being 44-18.
“I feel like a broken record,” Robinson said after the game. “I’m going to go in the dressing rooms now and we need to find some answers.
“We are putting ourselves in a position to win games, we continually go in at half-time, that’s the fourth time we’ve been winning at half-time. There was eight points in it with eight minutes to go in that game and I just thought there was some really soft stuff in that second half.
“The way we come out in the second half and gave away really soft penalties, it killed us. We need to fix it up.
“In the second half they were pretty much double our possession and we just couldn’t get the ball back. I just thought it was soft, the penalties were soft and we’re trying to cheat our way in games.
“For me, we were masters of our own downfall once again. We put up a really good performance in the first half and put ourselves in a strong position and the question I’m going to ask the group now is why are we not kicking on in the second half because history is repeating itself.”
Huddersfield Giants welcomed back Clune, Liam Sutcliffe and Taane Milne this week, but they lose Joe Greenwood, Matty English and Zac Woolford and their woes deepened ahead of kick-off when Tui Lolohea dropped out.
The word after the warm-ups was that Lolohea was unwell and speaking after the game, Robinson moved to clear things up.
“It was a bit of a strange one if I’m honest,” he added on the stand-off. “He started saying he was getting tightening around his chest and he couldn’t breathe, he was struggling to breathe.
“George Flanagan got drafted in last minute was it was a little bit disjointed for us but tha’s just the tale of the tape for us so far.”
Full-time.
