Last week, Ian Watson’s Huddersfield Giants travelled to the Barrow Raiders for the Challenge Cup Sixth Round.
In what was a beautiful afternoon at Craven Park, Barrow put up an excellent showing, going down eventually 30-16.
With Cumbria one of the traditional places for rugby league to take hold, Watson knew what his team would face when making the journey up there.
And, it is a team from that particular area that the Huddersfield boss wants to see in Super League in the future.
“I’d love there to be a Cumbrian team in there – I played at Workington when I was younger in their first year in Super League,” Watson said.
“You can see how the community gets behind the rugby league there and all the academies such as Wath Brow and Kells.
“It is a hotbed of rugby league and all the community get behind them.
“With our game being on the BBC, I hope it will have attracted more supporters.”
Of course, with three Cumbrian sides to choose from – Barrow, Workington and Whitehaven – it would be difficult to see which would poke their nose through the glass ceiling of Super League at present.
And, the talk of a merger to form Cumbria probably doesn’t help each individual club’s cause, but it would be interesting to see if one of them could make it to the ‘promised land’ in the near future.
