Huddersfield Giants boss confirms three departures and speaks out on Oliver Wilson speculation

Huddersfield Giants boss Luke Robinson

Luke Robinson has revealed that Jake Bibby, Jack Bibby and Aidan McGowan will be leaving Huddersfield Giants at the end of the Super League season.

The Giants had already revealed that Leroy Cudjoe would not playing on into 2026, with Cudjoe playing an emotional final game at the Accu Stadium last weekend.

However, three more players will be departing this season, McGowan and Jake and Jack Bibby all off contract and preparing to move on to pastures new. Jake Bibby is the most experienced and high profile departure, with the the 29-year-old joining from Wigan Warriors ahead of the 2023 Super League season.

Jack Bibby joined the club at the same time from Wigan, but has made just nine appearances for the club, while McGowan leaves after making 17 appearances.

“Jake will be playing on Friday night and he’s been unbelievable servant to the club,” Robinson said in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday. “He’s a great player and really well-liked within the group.

“It’s disappointing but in a salary cap sport, you can’t keep everybody. Leroy is retiring but Aidan McGowan, who is not going to playing this week is going to be moving on to pastures new as well.

“He is another one who is an unbelievable bloke. He’s shown he can play full-back at a very good level, he’s shown that in the Championship. I know George (Flanagan) has played there a lot this year and we’ve got Niall (Evalds) who can play that position, so he’s shown he can play in different positions.

“He’s been on the wing and he’s never let us down when he was on the wing but there are players in front of him in that position as well.

“He’s come through the ranks and has been brilliant for Huddersfield, he’s always around the scholarship lads and helping coach and he’s a really good human being. It’s disappointing he’ll be moving on as well.”

Huddersfield Giants boss comments on Oliver Wilson talk

Robinson also spoke about the future of Oliver Wilson, who has been linked with a move away from Huddersfield Giants in recent weeks. Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC are the amongst the clubs linked with a move for the forward, who is contracted until the end of the 2028 season.

Speaking on those reports, Robinson said: “He only signed a new deal not too long ago.

“I’ve heard a lot of the rumours. We need to sit down with Olly at the end of the year, we need to get this game out of the way, finish the season off and see where both parties are at.

“That’s pretty much our stance on it, we are getting the season out of the way first before discussing anything further.”

He added: “He’s got a contract with us and from our point of view, we want to get the season done and dusted before having open and honest conversations about where both parties are at.

“He’s a really good player and me and him have a really good relationship, we actually live about three streets away from each other. I’ve been involved with Olly for a while, we get on really well and are nice and honest with each other.

“The stance the club has taken is one that I agree with: let’s get the season out of the way before we start talking properly.

“Agents are always going to be talking, that’s their job and if they’re not doing that they’re not working hard enough for the player.”
