Huddersfield 10-20 Catalans: Player ratings and three major talking points

Huddersfield and Catalans met in a physical and brutal affair to close Round 2 of Super League. It was the French side who came up with the win looking impressive in the first half even when down a man. The Giants battled hard in the second half but in the end the Dragons did enough to win.

Major Talking Points:

1. Huddersfield missing Aidan Sezer

Huddersfield may sit towards the bottom of the early table with 2 defeats from 2, but the Giants have been competitive in both their opening defeats. They’ve lacked a bit of smarts and cutting edge – both assets talisman Sezer offers. His kicking game, organisation and creativity is something the Giants have sorely missed in the opening two rounds. The quicker he returns the quicker Huddersfield will turn these defeats into wins.

2. Catalans not an 80 minute team

The Dragons gave up a 28-4 advantage last week against Hull KR and needed golden point to vanquish the Robins. It was a similar story against Huddersfield today. They looked sharp and dominant in the first half even getting the better of Huddersfield when down to 12 men. However, in the second half they failed to force the issue despite a wealth of possession at the start of stanza and allowed Huddersfield back into the game. They didn’t score a single point in the second half. Some controversial and somewhat strange decisions did go against them however.

3. Blood Bath

Super League has always been commended for the size of its collisions and 2021 seems to be continuing the grand tradition of big impacts. However, it caused real problems today as multiple Catalans players ended up busted open slowing the game down as they required new shirts and taping up. For starters something has to be done to ensure such injuries don’t slow the game down as much as they did today. However, it does point to the superb physicality of our great game.
