How the 2021 Super League table would have looked if points percentage was scrapped

The points percentage debate in rugby league has raged on for the past two years as Super League attempted to recover from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The governing body made the Super League system fairer back in 2020, basing the end table result on the percentage of games won, rather than the total amount of points.

That meant that sides which played more games – like the Wigan Warriors who played 25 games in 2021, compared to Hull KR’s 20 – were not unfairly penalised.

It did, however, like anything, have its critics – those who played more games for example incurred more fatigue than those who – in Hull KR’s case – played five less games.

In that respect, us here at Serious About Rugby League thought it would be a good idea to see how the 2021 Super League table would have looked if points percentage had been scrapped and the league was instead based on the total amount of points accrued.

The top five would have stayed exactly the same, with Catalans Dragons finishing top by six points, St Helens in second, Warrington Wolves in third and Wigan Warriors in fourth. Leeds Rhinos would also have finished fifth again.

Castleford Tigers, however, would finish a place higher in sixth as Hull KR slipped to seventh.

Hull FC would also have dropped two places behind Huddersfield Giants and Wakefield Trinity, finishing third bottom.

The numbers from left to right are as follows: games played, games won, games drawn, games lost, points scored, points against, points difference and the total number of points.

The original 2021 Super League table:
