How Salford Red Devils tried to keep star player in 2023 but rivals had the “jump on them”

There’s no question over the quality of Huddersfield Giants recruitment with so much quality brought into the side ahead of 2023.

That said, there has been so many major signings going into 2023 that one or two have gone under the radar including the signing of former Warrington and Hull KR man Harvey Livett from Salford Red Devils.

This signing is one that Watson is very excited about after signing him at Salford but never having the chance to work with him due to his own switch to Huddersfield.

Watson, speaking to Giants TV, opened up on his excitement about working with Livett and revealed that Salford actually tried to re-sign him for 2023 after Huddersfield had already acquired his signature for this year.

Watson said: “I signed him at Salford, and I saw big potential in him at Warrington and what he was doing at Hull KR. He has great utility value, he can play almost anywhere. He played halfback at the end of the year.

“He has ability about him as just a football player. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to work with him at Salford but that first year at Salford he was the Players’ Player of the Year. He had real threat.

“Then in the off-season he had an injury, he came back played against Leeds and we’d already signed and he had a blinder there and I know the day after that Salford tried to re-sign him up but we’d already signed and we kind of got that jump on them.

“Really excited about building that relationship between coach and player.”
