How Newcastle Knights’ failure to capture Wigan Warriors man has left them chasing Manly man

Newcastle Knights have been quite happy to go to the well of Super League recently.

The Knights have all but confirmed the capture of two of Super League’s brightest young British players in the shape of Huddersfield Giants star Will Pryce and Wigan Warriors’ Kai Pearce-Paul.

The two have reportedly signed on for 2024 with the Knights trying but, at least for now, failing to acquire their services for 2023.

The Knights also tried to sign Bevan French and believed that they would only for Wigan’s offer to trump theirs and tie French down to the DW Stadium for the next two years with an option for a further two seasons.

Had French made the switch to the Knights it could have freed them up to play Kaylan Ponga at five-eighth as they want to do with French coming into the side at fullback allowing Ponga to make the switch.

This makes their decision to allow Tex Hoy to leave for Hull FC all the more surprising.

Nonetheless, according to the Daily Telegraph, the Knights have a new target in the shape of Manly’s Reuben Garrick.

Garrick has been filling in at fullback for the injured Tom Trbojevic but with Trbojevic set to be fit for the start of the season, Garrick will lose his fullback spot.

Perhaps wanting guaranteed first team rugby, he could be tempted to join the Knights for next year.
