How Ian Watson helped secure Salford Red Devils fullback’s move as he is likened to Castleford Tigers star

Rochdale Hornets have continued their influx of impressive signings.

After signing Wigan Warriors youngsters Ben O’Keefe and Toby Brannan, they have today confirmed the signing of former Wigan and Warrington Wolves Callum Green after he starred for Salford Red Devils’ reserves.

Speaking after the announcement, club chairman Andy Mazey also shared his optimism for Green, who he said is a player Rochdale have had on their radar for a number of seasons as he revealed how Huddersfield Giants boss Ian Watson played his part in the move:

“Cal’s a player I’ve followed closely since Ian Watson [former Salford coach] recommended him to me, while I was at Swinton.

“I was in contact with his representatives when he left Wigan but we couldn’t get anything done and instead he opted to take up an opportunity with Warrington.”

It was also suggested that Green had been compared to former Salford Red Devils star and Castleford Tigers man Niall Evals with the club saying in their statement:

“Mazey also recalled a conversation where Green was compared to former Salford Red Devils and England fullback Niall Evalds.”

On the move, Green said himself:

“I can’t wait to get started as we have a really good, enthusiastic and talented squad,” Green said.

“I’ve previously played with eight of the lads – many are good friends – and Rochdale is a great club which made the decision to sign a no brainier.”
