How Hull FC quota situation stacks up amidst major rebuild

Hull FC John Cartwright

Hull FC fans had to endure a torrid 2024 season, and focus is now firmly on the next one.

With a new head coach in John Cartwright and a heavy bout of recruitment behind them, there’s hope that there will be much better rugby at the MKM Stadium.

After just three wins all year, it’s hard to see how the next one could be any worse.

Currently, clubs can have a maximum of seven ‘non-Federation trained players’ in their squad – and these players are defined as those who didn’t play three seasons of rugby in Europe before they turned 21.

With that in mind, here’s Hull FC’s quota situation for next year.

2024 was a season full of change for Hull FC, and that included their quota players.

All of Tex Hoy, Nu Brown, Jayden Okunbor and Franklin Pele left mid-season, giving them four new spots to play with, while Carlos Tuimavave also left at the end of the year.

That meant there was plenty of room for new overseas recruits, and they haven’t been afraid to utilise this fact.

Jed Cartwright was signed mid-season from Newcastle Knights, and is contracted through 2025.

Meanwhile, pre-existing player Ligi Sao has another year of his contract, and Herman Ese’ese has another two – which will be of great relief to a number of fans of the Black and Whites after his excellent 2024.

Jordan Rapana and Aidan Sezer have both signed from NRL on two-year deals, meaning they’ll be contracted through 2026 – and represent a real statement of intent for the side. Another player on a two-year deal is former Wigan and Salford man Cade Cust who reunites with his former Manly coach.

Finally, new signing John Asiata will take up a spot and he is contracted through 2027 with the Black and Whites beating out Leigh Leopards to secure his services.

Asiata’s signing certainly shook a frustrated Derek Beaumont, but Cust’s signing will be less frustrating for the Red Devils, who have Jayden Nikorima to be alongside Marc Sneyd next year.
