Hodgson praises players for “sticking up for each other” in tense win over Leeds

Hull FC ran out 18-12 winners against Leeds, but the game threatened to boil over on a number of occasions.

Hull head coach Brett Hodgson, however, felt his side managed that part of the game well.

“I actually thought our boys handled the niggly stuff really well tonight, we learnt our lessons from last week,” Hodgson said.

“I thought our boys were just sticking up for each other. From the context of last week’s result, we wanted to get back on the horse so to speak.”

Hodgson was also thoroughly impressed with how his side defended for each other.

“It was a tough game to watch, and the conditions made it so we couldn’t get a foothold.

“Our willingness and resilience to turn up for each other in the second-half in defence was really pleasing.

“We kept giving them opportunities which we could have done better with, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t have about 40 or 50 tackles within our 20 metres in the second-half, our defence was unbelievable tonight.

“The team effort was excellent, and the way in which Marc Sneyd and Josh Reynolds controlled the first-half was excellent.

“Our middles rolled their sleeves up again in what were dire conditions.

“At times when you’re investing so much in defence you can then lose the offensive part of the game, but we continued to turn them away.

“Obviously we’re not happy with our completion rate in the second-half.”

The match will probably be remembered for one incredible moment from Carlos Tuimavave, who was able to hold up Leeds’ Tom Briscoe despite it looking easier for the latter to score.

“I think you’ve got to give Jake Connor credit too for what he did initially and together they came up with a big, big play.

“That’s the willingness that we’ve spoken about – we kept turning up for each other.

“There were times where we were short and had to scramble and our willingness to keep working off the ball was incredible which is why we are sitting where we are at the moment.”
