Highlights as ex-Warrington Wolves man produces magic moment in Greece’s defeat to France

France have a real hope of making the quarter-finals after defeating Greece 34-12 tonight.

But the best moments of the match came from the spirit Greek side playing with the freedom of men who have finally seen the sport legalised in their country.


Jordan Dezaria gets France underway
Greece started well with some real energy and some great probing runs with South Sydney halfback Lachlan Ilias looking sharp. However, France ensured their endeavour was for nothing when Alrix Da Costa opened up the space for big prop Jordan Dezaria to go over to score.

Gigot doesn’t give up the play
Despite scoring the first try of the game, France didn’t quite have the command they would have wanted after the first quarter of the game until Tony Gigot, after a mixed bag of a first 20, never gave up on a probing grubber kick into the in goal was just about to get to it to score.

Benjamin breaks through
Alrix Da Costa had created France’s first try and a scamper into space from the Catalans hooker opened up just enough space for Benjamin Jullien to power over to make it 20-0 at halftime.

Mourgue shows great strength to get the ball down after superb break
In the first half, France played conservative and it paid off with three tries and eventual dominance. However, they would score a long range try in the second half with Catalans’ livewire Arthur Mourgue supporting a break and showing great strength to get the ball down despite great cover defence from Greece.

History for Siteni Taukamo
Greece gave a good go of it tonight both in defence and with ball in hand and deserved a try which came for winger Taukamo after a lovely grubber behind the France defence from skipper Jordan Meads. A great moment for Greek rugby which has only just been legalised in the country.

France show their quality with attack out wide
The French spine combined masterfully for their fifth try of the night. The try pass came from Morgan Escare with Jullien hitting a great line to score a superb try.

Try of the game goes to Greece
Greece didn’t deserve to lose 34-6 and they didn’t with a second try in the second half ensuring they only lost the second 40 14-12 and produced the try of the game. The magic moment was conjured up by former Warrington forward Billy Magoulias who chipped over to the left wing where Nicholas Mougios caught it, broke clear and turned the French cover inside and out on the way to a special try.
