“He’s not an aggressive player” – Wilkin explains why this player keeps getting sin binned

St Helens got back to winning ways last night.

The Saints have lost four games in their opening nine and in three of those defeats they went down to 12 men and in two of them it Matty Lees who was sin binned.

Both were considered harsh and last week Paul Wellens said of Lees’ yellow card against Hull KR:

“It’s never ideal when you lose a player in that fashion. I probably need to be careful because when Matty Lees was sin-binned against Leigh a few weeks ago I was critical of his discipline. I then watched it back and realised that it actually shouldn’t have been a sin bin.

“I’ve not actually had the opportunity to watch the incident back so I’ll reserve judgement until I see it, but Matty Lees is a player who is invaluable to us and he showed that tonight.

“Whether he’s got one right or wrong there I’m not sure.”

Last night as Saints defeated Warrington, Lees was brilliant and Jon Wilkin explained why he thinks Lees keeps getting into trouble.

He said: “Matty Lees is such a committed player, if anything that is what gets him in trouble at times. He is not a violent player or an overly aggressive player he is just 100% committed at all times.”
