Will Pryce may have been on the losing side but Hull FC boss John Cartwright was more than pleased with what he saw from the half-back on Saturday.
Pryce only arrived in East Yorkshire on Wednesday, two days after his move from Newcastle Knights to Hull was announced, and he was thrust straight into the line-up for a debut against Hull KR in the Challenge Cup. He couldn’t lead the Black and Whites to victory on the day, with the Robins winning 32-16 at the MKM Stadium, but he did show glimpses of his class.
The 22-year-old almost scored in the first half, bursting away down the right edge before eventually being hauled down just a few metres short of the Rovers line, and he had his say as Hull scored three tries against the Robins.
It’s clear that Pryce will be better the more time he has on the training field with his new teammates and Cartwright saw plenty of promising signs.
“I thought he was great for us today,” Cartwright said after seeing his Hull FC side knocked out of the cup. “I thought he really challenged.
“He got the ball in hands and for a guy that’s only had a 20-minute session with the team yesterday, I thought he handled himself really well. He’s going to be a huge asset for the club.
“He’s three days off a plane and anyone that’s travelled knows it’s a taxing thing to do. To come out and play the way he did – your halves have got to be confident and I thought he played full of confidence.
“He kicked when he had to and I thought he was very strong defensively, they targeted him pretty well on that edge, but he handled himself extremely well. I just liked his touches on the ball, you can see he’s all class.
“A bit of time around the group to form some combinations, I think he’s going to be a great asset for the club.”
