Hellewell becomes latest Leigh signing

Leigh Centruions have signed Scotland international Ben Hellewell from London Broncos for the 2020 season.

The 28-year-old centre/back-rower becomes the club’s third addition of the day following the signing of Danny Addy and the re-signing of Iain Thornley.

Hellewell is an experienced Championship player having appeared for numerous clubs in the division.

He spent last season on dual-registration with Sheffield Eagles where he made 12 appearances and helped them win the 1895 Cup.

“Benny played centre at Featherstone for a few years before going to London but he didn’t really get his chance this year,” Leigh head coach John Duffy told the club’s website.

“I see him more as a backrow and that’s a position where he will excel because he’s a real tough lad. He’s a no-nonsense type of player who will get through his work and probably be unnoticed.

“When I had him in the backrow at Scotland, he was playing against big teams like the Kiwis and he was outstanding. When he’s on his game, he’s superb.”

Hellewell added: “I love working with John – he’s a good coach and a good people person. I know from being involved at Scotland that he’s all about the lads and a good man manager.

“I’m joining a club that will have no excuses for not doing well next season. They are building a really competitive squad that is good enough to really challenge for promotion.

“I know a lot of the players there and I know there is a good culture at the club. They have a passionate fanbase and I am looking forward to getting stuck in.

“It was a former Leigh player Greg Richards that recommended I come here and I’m especially looking forward to linking up with the likes of Tom Spencer who I played with at London last season.”
