Head coach fumes after referee’s failure to brandish red card

Penrith head coach Ivan Cleary was annoyed that Brisbane forward Thomas Flegler wasn’t sent-off for a high tackle that ended Isaah Yeo’s night.

The NRL has recently cracked down on high shots, and, with Yeo flattened and knocked out, somehow Flegler wasn’t given his marching orders.

“Nah, not in my opinion,” Cleary said when asked if the sin-bin was sufficient.

“He was knocked out as soon as he hit him. It’s an illegal act, that’s why he got sent to the bin, so I don’t know what you’ve got to do to get sent off.

“If it was Magic Round he would have been sent off. We haven’t seen it for a bit but clearly, a high tackle that knocks him out on contact, you lose your captain and one of your best players for the game.

“Nothing against Flegler but he hit him high, flush and knocked him out. What do we need? It certainly affected us more than them.”
