Hull KR boss Willie Peters has made the case for Joe Burgess to be included in Shaun Wane’s England squad this autumn.
Burgess was one of Rovers’ star men this weekend, scoring two tries to help the club claim a 34-0 win over Huddersfield Giants and re-establish themselves and summit of Super League. In fact, it’s fair to say the winger has been one of the club’s most impressive over the course of the campaign, especially in recent weeks scoring nine tries in his last 10 games.
The 30-year-old scored 18 last season, but he’s on course to beat that tally at present this time around and Peters believes Shaun Wane ought to be keeping a close eye on him.
It’s been 10 years since Burgess was last in the England set up, with his three caps coming at the end of the 2015 season under Steve McNamara. However, with Matty Ashton being ruled out for the rest of the campaign, Wane will be looking at other wingers to bring into his squad for the Ashes and it’s fair to say that few are reaching the levels Burgess is right now.
Hull KR head coach makes England case for Joe Burgess
“He certainly needs to be in the conversation because Shaun Wane will be looking at who will worry Australian players and their coaching staff,” said Peters after Burgess’ brace against the Giants. “Give Budge an inch and he’s gone.
“He took advantage of some opportunities in this game and that’s what it might be in a Test – it might just be one opportunity.
“There’s a lot of outside backs in the country, both here and representing England in the NRL, but there’s no doubt he should be in the conversation.
“He brings a lot of energy and is a character. He wants to win things and is not getting any younger. He’s taking advantage of what we’re chasing at the moment.”
