“He can play a lot better” – Shaun Wane on John Bateman’s place in his England side

John Bateman (13) of Wigan Warriors

John Bateman picked up the Man of the Match for England yesterday for an excellent performance in which he scored a try down to a superb feat of strength and also created the try of the game for George Williams.

To many, as a world class backrow, this performance surely would be further proof that Bateman is nailed on for a spot in Shaun Wane’s England team.

However, that’s not the case with Wane praising him but also noting that he can do better: “He did good today. Played in the middle with a bit of freedom. I thought he had a really good game.

“There were a few defensive errors early in the game. I think he needs to get rid of them. Overall he was busy and looked good but I genuinely think he can play a lot better. There are a couple of details that he needs to get better.”

He would then go onto reveal that Bateman’s place in the England side is not nailed down like others: “I’m not sure John’s one of them – I’d say three or four are nailed on but if their performances dip this year – when I say the door’s open, I genuinely mean that.

“I know in my heart and listen to my coaches. Anyone can force their way into the England team.”
