Salford Red Devils have confirmed their 21-man squad for their League Leaders’ Shield-deciding clash with Wigan Warriors on Thursday night.
A draw for the Warriors will confirm that they finish top of the Super League table for the second-successive season.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils are playing for a home play-off, as they’re in prime position to finish fourth – although this is far from confirmed.
However, their squad, released an hour-and-a-half late, has now been confirmed, and it’s one that will infuriate Hull KR fans.
“Handed them the league title”: Salford Red Devils confirm team news for Wigan Warriors clash
There could be eight debutants in a very weak looking squad that has been named by head coach Paul Rowley, and the club said: “With qualification for the playoffs secure, our Head Coach has opted to give key players a well-earned rest in anticipation of a tough eliminator clash.
“Alongside some returning first-team players like Adam Sidlow and Amir Bourouh, there’s plenty of our reserve grade talent looking for a chance to impress.
“In there is our Reserves Player of the Year, Charlie McCurrie, whose dad, Steve McCurrie also played professional rugby league – mainly for Widnes Vikings and Warrington Wolves.
“Jamie Pye and Kai Morgan has also been recalled from their loans at Barrow Raiders and Halifax Panthers, respectively.”
Many have questioned why it’s such a weak squad – with just three of their players with squad numbers 1-13 named, with the likes of Ryan Brierley, Nene Macdonald, Marc Sneyd and captain Kallum Watkins not involved.
A Hull KR fan suggested via Twitter: “Deserve a hefty points deduction from next season. Disgusting.”
A Wigan fan, meanwhile, said: Cheers lads for giving us the league shield always loved you!”
Anything but a Wigan loss means Hull KR can’t win the League Leaders’ Shield, and their wait for silverware will go on.

And now this gives the bobbins even more to whine whine and whine on like a sodding broken record. Blame the rfl blame the blind ref but whatever you do don’t blame the players for ill discipline because they don’t want to hear the truth. Wannabees.

Serves the RFL right for messing around with the fixtures. Should’ve all been played at the same time. Sudden death!

This is the problem with this grand final knock out comp. Teams only want to finish in top two so they get a better chance off making the final. But the priority is just to finish in a play off spot, so apart from the top teams, and KR this season, just making the top 6 is enough for them and then they can rest players. Therefore a lack of ambition becomes the norm. This is the same in football, top is great, champions league better.

Er. Did not HKR do the very same thing against Wigan last season before their challenge cup final against Leigh?
Hypocrisy is hypocrisy and KR fans should remember that – Wigan have been top of the league for ove 70% of the season and hold ALL competition trophies – no amount of shallow blame culture can dispute the evidence of that
