Halifax snap up ex-Leeds Rhinos man

Halifax Panthers have signed Liam Whitton joins the Panthers having once been a part of the Leeds Rhinos academy set-up.

The young fullback was a prolific try scorer during his academy days, crossing for a crucial score to help the Rhinos secure the Academy Grand Final and regularly crossing the whitewash in the regular season.

He spent time on loan at their dual registration partner club Featherstone Rovers, where Whitton eventually signed a permanent deal.

However, with chances there limited, the 20 year old decided a return to the community game would be better for his long term development.

Whitton returned to the place where it all started to play regular football for Siddal’s first team in the National Conference League, where his performances at fullback prompted head coach Simon Grix to pounce and secure the rising star.

Whitton said: “I’m buzzing to sign for this great club and it’s even more special that it’s my hometown club. I’m looking forward to ripping in and having a special year at The Shay.”

Head coach Simon Grix was happy to secure his new rising talent:

“Liam is an exciting prospect with speed to burn. He is just coming off his first full season of men’s rugby with Siddal where he has been a standout player.

“Coming through the Leeds Rhinos academy system he has a solid foundation to move forward with. The cancellation of the reserves competition last year meant he had to leave the club, but did so with admirers frustrated at the circumstances. He is well placed to continue his development here, providing healthy competition to our full back options.”
