Halifax Panthers are one of several rugby league clubs to become embroiled in financial issues during the 2024 season with the Championship side narrowly avoiding a HMRC Winding Up Petition. They have now moved to offer an update and ‘reassure’ fans of their financial status.

Reports of Halifax’s financial woes began in early September with the club confirming that they had cumulative debts of £80,000 and would need a further £120,000-plus to complete the year.

That £200,000 hole hung heavy on the club, however, they were able to settle their HMRC bill on the back of a series of different incomes including what they labelled ‘commercial activity’ and ‘accelerated RFL payments’.

There was also thousands raised in funds by the club’s fans which helped stave off potential collapse but as we go deep into the 0ff-season, Fax have once again released a statement on their financial situation in a move aimed to ‘reassure’ fans.

Whilst Fax had settled that debt, reports of a second HMRC Winding Up Petition emerged in late October, something that the club refuted by stating: “As far as we are concerned, all our obligations have been met.”

They’ve now provided another statement confirming that they remain ‘actively engaged’ with HMRC and ‘remain confident of a positive outcome’.

In full, the statement read: “Halifax Panthers would like to address the concerns raised regarding the recent HMRC winding-up petition. We want to reassure our supporters, sponsors, and community that we remain confident in the club’s position and its future stability.

“All outstanding liabilities to HMRC have been settled, and our legal counsel assures us that the club is in a strong legal position. While we are actively engaging with HMRC in the hope of resolving this matter amicably, the High Court hearing represents an opportunity to formally clarify our position. We remain confident of a positive outcome and are fully prepared to protect the integrity of the club.

“The past few months have brought challenges, but the unwavering support of our fans, sponsors, and stakeholders has been a cornerstone of our resilience. Halifax Panthers has been a vital part of the rugby league landscape for over a century, and we are steadfast in our commitment to ensuring this continues. We are looking forward to the 2025 season with optimism and determination.

“As always, we extend our gratitude to everyone who has offered support during this time.”
