Haggerty gives update on McCarthy

Leigh Centurions interim Head Coach Kurt Haggerty has said forward Tyrone McCarthy is in a “bad way” after failing his HIA.

The Ireland international was knocked out after a clash with Warrington Wolves forward Sitaleki Akauola in the opening exchanges of Leigh’s 44-18 defeat.

He said: “Tyke’s in a pretty bad way. It’s a nasty clash. So we need to check on him and make sure he is OK.

“Thankfully, we had middles on the bench that were able to help that situation.”

The tackle also sparked a debate on social media about the rule that says a ball carrier can use their shoulder in a tackle.

When asked what he thought of the rule, Haggery added: “It’s difficult because it’s not deemed illegal. But if that is the way some people carry the ball, and it’s in the rules, then we have to carry on with what it is.”

Haggerty also confirmed Ben Reynolds picked up a knee injury, which will be looked at. He also said Matty Russell will be assessed further.
