After a superb career, Shaun Lunt today announced on Twitter that he wouldn’t play rugby league again as he called time on his career.

Lunt was set to play in 2021 for Barrow in League 1 but has instead opted to retire having not played in over a year after the Pandemic cut last year’s Championship campaign short leaving him with just 6 appearances for Batley Bulldogs.

He took to Twitter to make the announcement saying: “Well Rugby League it’s been emotional…. Our time has came to an end unfortunately. I’ve been very fortunate through hard work and dedication to have a career I could’ve only of dreamt of as a kid! Met some sensational people along way also… On to the next chapter now.”

Lunt can look back fondly on his career. He didn’t do it the conventional way starting off at lower league Workington before he was signed by Huddersfield. He remained their until 2015 but spent a season on loan at Leeds where he became a Grand Final winner even going as far as supplying the assist for Carl Ablett’s try as the Rhinos claimed the 2012 Super League title.

He then returned to play a huge part in Huddersfield’s finest Super League season under Paul Anderson as the Giants finished top in 2013.

In 2015 he moved to Hull KR even captaining the side until he returned to Leeds in 2019 on loan to play a handful of games.

He made one appearance for England back in 2010 ensuring that he achieved just about everything he possibly could.
