Goole Vikings secure ex-Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers forward as Scott Taylor’s squad takes shape

Goole Vikings have made former Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants man Brett Ferres their latest recruit for the upcoming season. The East Yorkshire outfit are preparing to enter League One for the first time next year and slowly but surely their squad is coming together.

Goole have made one or two high profile additions and it’s fair to say Ferres might just be the biggest name the club have secured so far, with the forward winning 16 caps for England over his career, while also winning a Grand Final, a League Leaders’ Shield and a World Club Challenge, with the latter coming in the colours of Bradford Bulls.

Indeed, Odsal is where Ferres started his career and since then the 38-year-old has had spells with Wakefield Trinity, Castleford Tigers, Huddersfield, Leeds, Featherstone Rovers and Doncaster, spending his most recent two seasons in the game at the latter. He has racked up over 400 career appearances in that time, but it’s fair to say the challenge of helping a new League One club off the ground is a new one.

“I think this is a very special opportunity for us to be part of something unique,” Ferres told the club website. “It is going to be great for the town and I’m looking forward to the journey ahead.

“I was really impressed with James and Scott’s enthusiasm and vision for the club, and I am really excited to be a part of that.

“I’ve been fortunate to play at a high level for a long time and I’m keen to bring that experience to the club and help some of the younger players develop, I can’t wait for the challenge.”

Head coach Scott Taylor added: “Brett Ferres signing for the Vikings is another notable coup for the club, we are really pleased to get this one done.

“He has achieved it all in the game over a fantastic career, including representing his country, so he will bring a huge amount of experience and leadership to our group, which will be fantastic for our younger players.

“Brett is a natural leader, he talks well and he is a winner. His presence will not only lift the players around him, but I think alongside our other new signings, it will also continue to raise the excitement around the whole club for the season ahead.”

Ferres becomes Goole Vikings’ eighth signing, joining Tom Halliday, Ben Hodder, Jamie Shaul, Josh Guzdek, Thomas Minns, Reece Dean and Alex Holdstock.
