Goole Vikings announce head coach and first player as club officially launches

Goole Vikings

Former Hull FC man Scott Taylor has been officially unveiled as head coach of the sport’s newest professional club Goole Vikings.

Taylor retired from playing at the end of the 2023 Super League season having taken in spells with Hull KR, Wigan Warriors, Salford and, of course, his boyhood club Hull, where he won two Challenge Cup finals.

However, after a year out of the game, Taylor has stepped back in at the bottom rung of the ladder as he prepares to take over Goole, having penned a two-year deal. The Vikings have been accepted into League One next season, with the club looking to bridge the gap between East and West Yorkshire on the rugby league map.

Goole have been playing amateur rugby league for a number of years, but they have made the decision to turn professional, with the help of former Hull FC CEO James Clark, who will continue to play a role at the club moving forward.

Taylor knows Clark well of course, and after earning his coaching badges and has worked with the amateur side Beverley Braves, but this will be his first role in the professional game.

The announcement was made in Goole this afternoon at a media event which saw the club formally launch as the Vikings. They have a busy few months ahead with Taylor and Clark looking to build a squad of players they hope can compete in the third tier.

The club have also announced that Tom Halliday as their first signing as a professional club. Halliday is from Goole and will be joining the club from Championship outfit Doncaster.

Halliday had been with Doncaster since 2019 following a spell with Dewsbury Rams. The 28-year-old is expected to be joined by a raft of signings from the local area as the club prepares to enter next season’s League One competition.
