George Williams reveals he turned down “a couple of clubs”

George Williams has revealed what his future holds on Sky Sports.

The halfback has confirmed that he will be staying at the Wolves having agreed a two year extension.

He said on Sky Sports: “I have made a decision and I have signed a two year extension with the Warrington Wolves.”

He went on to reveal that he turned down “a couple” of offers to return to the NRL.

“There were some options there, they spoke to my agents did a couple of clubs.

“There is always going to be an ambition to go to the NRL and play in that competition but I feel like I have been there and done that.

“I feel like I am enjoying it at Warrington and hopefully we can start winning some trophies and stay top of the league, that would be nice.”

NRL side Wests Tigers were reportedly interested in Super League star Williams.

After a tough 2022 season in a struggling Warrington Wolves side which finished 11th in the league, their lowest ever finish, Williams showed his class for England in the Rugby League World Cup and has now taken that form into the 2023 season and we are seeing the Williams of old.

Given a platform by Josh Drinkwater, the halfback is devastating teams and is top of the Man of Steel rankings.

However, the Wolves were set to face a fight to keep him at the club with the Daily Telegraph reporting that the Tigers were interested in the halfback for 2024.

The club are unsure about running with Luke Brooks in the halves moving forward despite letting former Man of Steel and Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils star Jackson Hastings leave for Newcastle Knights.

Thus, they are considering their options for the 2024 season but with a lack of halfbacks off contract in the NRL and wanrted to try and lure Williams down under.

Brooks meanwhile has been linked with a move to Leeds Rhinos by the Mole of Wide World of Sport.

Williams previously starred in the NRL for Canberra Raiders where he impressed alongside former Wigan teammate John Bateman.

Speaking on Sky Sports recently, Williams himself said you can’t rule anything out and when the time comes he will assess his options:

“I’m not too sure what will happen in the future. I will definitely be here at Warrington this year and next year and I will see what the future holds but I am really enjoying myself here, obviously we’re winning and the fan base has been unbelievable so hopefully that can continue.

“I definitely wouldn’t write it off [a return to the NRL.] You have to explore your options. But I have 18 months left on my contract so I have a while till then.
