George Burgess reveals Super League players could face ’75 percent pay cut’

Wigan Warriors and England star George Burgess has revealed that Super League players may be looking at a 75 percent pay cut due to the current COVID-19 epidemic.

On a face-time call with Fox League Mornings in Australia, Burgess spoke to brother and former teammate Sam Burgess to give an update on the current affairs in Super League.

“At the minute, we’re on a week-to-week basis, just getting regular updates from the people on top in Super League and the RFL,” Burgess told Fox League Mornings.

“The club has been good and has been keeping us updated on our pays and I think across the board, players are going to have to take a pay cut, which is what needs to be done to keep the game alive over here.

“It could get as high as 75 percent cut of our wages. We’ve been told that’s what needs to come for the game to survive at the very minimum.”

Burgess joined the Warriors from the South Sydney Rabbitohs at the end of 2019, and admits that it’s a tough situation, but the players are willing to do what is necessary in order to keep Super League alive.

“It’s a big one, but it’s a game that we all love and it’s a game we’re willing to sacrifice to keep going.”
