George Burgess makes surprise return to Rugby League

Wigan Warriors star George Burgess in Super League

For a generation of English Rugby League fans, and fans of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, the Burgess brothers are the gold standard in front-rowers. For England, Sam, Tom and George Burgess were like some kind of three-headed mythological beast, primed to defend their patch.

However, all good things must come to an end, and in recent years, the Burgesses have slowly faded from their peaks. Eldest brother Luke retired in 2018, after a spell with Salford Red Devils. Sam is currently the head coach of Warrington Wolves and Tom is set to return to the UK for the first time in his playing career to join the Huddersfield Giants in 2025.

George Burgess retired in 2022, with a serious hip injury hampering the end of his career. In total, he played 153 NRL games, scoring 13 tries, along with appearing 15 times at international level for England, scoring twice.

However, he now looks set to return to Rugby League and will play for a surprise new club.

According to a report to the Daily Telegraph, former England test international, George Burgess, is set to make a surprise return to Rugby League. Burgess had a glittering career in the NRL and Super League, across spells with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Wigan Warriors and St George Illawarra.

However, after appearing in the Cairns district Rugby League competition in 2023 with the Cairns Brother, Burgess now looks set to play in the South Sydney Junior Rugby League competition, two years on from retiring from the professional game. The report states:

“George Burgess is set for a surprise return to rugby league in Sydney.

“Burgess, 32, has been cleared by the South Sydney Junior Rugby League board to play the rest of this season with Malabar-based South Eastern Seagulls A-grade side.

“A former England Test forward, Burgess played last season with Cairns Brothers after retiring from the NRL in 2022.”

Since retiring, Burgess has pursued a career in acting, starring in several films and has worked with South Sydney co-owner, Russell Crowe.
