Gary Hetherington reveals the plan for a new head coach at Leeds Rhinos after Richard Agar steps down

Leeds Rhinos

Rugby league was met with the news that Richard Agar had stepped down as Leeds Rhinos head coach this morning

Chairman of Leeds Rhinos Gary Hetherington has had his say on who the West Yorkshire club will appoint moving forward, but that the process will take as long as it takes.

“We’ve now got a vacancy for a head coaching role and that will be an exhaustive search,” Hetherington said.

“Three are no red lines – we will start with a blank piece of paper and identify the skill set that we are looking for.

“We want them to make an impact, it’s a demanding job being a Super League head coach and even more so at a club like Leeds Rhinos.

“It needs a special person with desire and determination and the search begins today but there is no time scale for it to be completed.

Hetherington is confident that the two men put in interim charge will do a great job in the meantime.

“Jamie Jones-Buchanan will step up and take the responsibilities along with Sean Long.

“We’ve got a great support staff behind them, and Jamie will assume many responsibilities but I don’t know for how long.

“I’m pretty sure he’s got the professional character to make a difference and as Richard said we’ve got very strong squad.”
