Gareth Widdop speaks out after dismal end

Gareth Widdop (7) of Warrington Wolves celebrates his try with Blake Austin (6) of Warrington Wolves

Gareth Widdop won Warrington Wolves’ 2021 Player of the Year award at the club’s awards presentation last night.

And, whilst declaring just how proud he is of scooping up the title, Widdop was also keen to stress that the year wasn’t up to his or the club’s standards.

“It’s a huge honour to win this award, a lot of players have played some really good football this year,” Widdop said.

“So to receive this award on a personal level it’s really pleasing – it’s taken a lot of sacrifice along with my teammates.

“I’d like to thank the fans who turn up week in week out and to all the coaching staff and players it’s been a really good year.

“We fell a little bit short but on a personal level it’s a great honour to receive this award, a lot of great players have won this before.”

Warrington finished the 2021 season in third, but fell at the elimination play-offs to Hull KR in a dismal 19-0 home loss.
