Gareth Widdop opens up on his return from Australia, George Williams and the year ahead

Gareth Widdop has returned to Warrington after an extended period of time in Australia and is raring to g ahead of the new season.

Widdop had a stellar 2021 Super League season for the Wolves, receiving a nomination for the Man of Steel though he eventually lost out to winner Sam Tomkins.

It was even more impressive considering he played in the UK for most of the season without his family who were in Australia.

But, now Widdop is keen to hit the ground running once more in light of the new coaching change.

“It’s good to be back in straight away, it’s been tough, but you set yourself up for the year ahead,” Widdop told theĀ Warrington Wolves website.

“There’s been a fair bit of change with the coaching staff, but it’s something that the boys have bought into and we’ve been training well.

“I spent a little bit of time in Australia and it’s good to be back and see new faces.

“I’ve been thrown back into it, now it’s time to knuckle down before our first game.”

Widdop was also keen to stress just how much he is looking forward to rekindling his partnership with George Williams.

“George came halfway through the year last year and it was difficult circumstances for himself.

“But, to get a pre-season and a full year playing together I’m really excited for it.

“I’ve played with George in the past at international level so it’s great to play week in week out with him – he’s a quality player and we will be working very closely.”
