Gareth Widdop heads home

Gareth Widdop is on his way back to Australia to link up with his family following a year spent without them.

Widdop had a stellar 2021 season where he was nominated for the prestigious Steve Prescott Man of Steel award and he is now set to reward himself with a trip home after being left out of Shaun Wane’s England side for this weekend’s clash against France.

Rumours had struck early on in the season when Widdop’s family returned Down Under, but Warrington chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick dismissed such speculation back in July

“There has been a lot of rumours Down Under about Gareth,” Fitzpatrick said.

“But he will be here next year.

“He has been in devastating form and was player of the month.

“Fans can look forward to seeing them together this year and next.”

The English halfback had suffered with injury towards the back end of the season but he is set to be ready for pre-season under new Wolves boss Daryl Powell.

Widdop struck up a potent halfback partnership with new recruit George Williams and the duo will be looking to build on that in 2022.
