Gareth Widdop gives Warrington a major boost following the Christmas period

Gareth Widdop has handed the Warrington Wolves a major boost going into the second period of pre-season.

The England international has returned for pre-season training after he was given a longer break to see his family over the Christmas period.

Widdop was pictured, alongside Matt Davis and Greg Minikin, in one of Warrington’s snaps as Super League sides hit the field after a two-week period off.

In his first interview, new head coach Daryl Powell stated: “It’s an embedded spine – they know each other. We’re going to play differently to the way Warrington’s played in the last few years. My job is to make sure that’s knitted together before the start of the season.

“Widdop, Williams, Ratchford and then Clark at 9 with Danny Walker as an option – they’re great people to have in your squad and as good as anything in Super League and potentially the world of Rugby League.”

For Powell, handing Widdop an extended break was necessary given that he went most of the season in the UK without his family cheering him on in the flesh.

It’s a new look Warrington for 2022 with the likes of Oliver Holmes and Peter Mata’utia joining Powell at the Halliwell Jones from former side Castleford, whilst assistant coach Ryan Sheridan has also made the move with his number one.
