Gareth Widdop given green light

St George Illawarra Dragons have told Gareth Widdop’s manager that they would not stand in the way of Canberra or the New Zealand Warriors signing the halfback if he returns to the NRL before the end of 2021.

Former Dragons skipper Widdop was released by the club ahead of the 2020 season to enable the Halifax-born playmaker to join Warrington, but St George retained the option to sign him for the last two years of his contract if he returned to the NRL.

This, however, has apparently been waived in the favour of Widdop returning to another club, NRL.com has revealed.

Widdop’s family is already back in Australia after they couldn’t settle in the UK, with the halfback trying to find a club Down Under at the end of last season to no avail.

That will pave the way for ex-Raider George Williams to join Warrington as early as this or next week.
